Fan noise without air: how to get the sound and skip the draft
Updated
If your fan hums but doesn't blow, that's a repair issue; this guide is about getting the sound on purpose. You can get the sound of a fan without any air moving by playing a recording of one on your phone. The Fan Noise app does that: it loops fan recordings, and nothing in it blows on you. Pair it with a sleep timer and the sound fades out on its own, so nothing is left running all night.
Why separate the sound from the air
A real fan gives you two things at once: moving air and a steady hum. Some people only want the hum. A draft can feel cold in winter, and some people suspect the fan when they wake up with a dry throat.
On the dry throat, MedlinePlus lists "a dry feeling in your throat" as a symptom of dry mouth, and breathing through your mouth among its causes, along with side effects of some medicines, diseases such as diabetes and Sjogren's syndrome, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and nerve damage. It doesn't mention fans. So a fan may or may not be the reason. If you have dry mouth, MedlinePlus says it's important to find out the cause, which a health care provider or dentist can help with.
One catch: a recording doesn't cool the room. If you run a fan to beat the heat, the sound alone won't do that.
Is the sound alone good for sleep?
That's less settled than people assume. A 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews (Riedy et al., PubMed 33007706) looked at 38 articles on continuous white noise and similar broadband noise. The studies differed a lot in the noise used and in how sleep was measured. The authors rated the quality of evidence that continuous noise improves sleep as very low, and noted that it may also negatively affect sleep and hearing. The review covers white noise and similar noise, not fans in particular.
So treat a fan recording as background sound you like, not as a treatment. Our guides on fan noise for sleeping, whether background noise is bad for sleep and whether sleeping with a fan is bad go through the research in more detail.
How to set up a fan sound with a timer
Fan Noise is an iPhone app with five fan recordings. The sounds are stored in the app, so it works offline, with no ads and no account. It isn't a sleep tracker.
- Open the Sounds tab and tap Change sound.
- Pick a fan. Classic Ceiling Fan, Modern Tower Fan and Window Box Fan are free. Industrial Fan and Quiet Breeze are Premium and show as locked until you have Premium.
- Tap play, then drag the volume slider.
- Under Sleep timer, tap the Fade-out menu and choose 30s, 1m, 2m or 5m. The default is 1m.
- Tap a preset: 15m, 30m, 1h or 2h. The countdown starts, the sound fades during the fade-out period and then stops.
To cancel, tap the stop button on the timer. Each sound loops until you pause it or the timer ends. It keeps playing with the screen locked, and you can play or pause from the lock screen.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. Fan Noise provides background sound for sleeping or concentrating and isn't a treatment. If you have a health concern, talk to a doctor.
FAQ
- How can I sleep without a fan?
- If it's the sound you miss, play a recording of a fan instead (more in can't sleep without fan noise). The fan noise app plays five fan recordings with a sleep timer and fade-out, and nothing in it moves air. It won't cool the room, so if you wanted the airflow for heat, a recording doesn't replace it.
- Is there an alternative to sleeping with a fan?
- For the sound, a recorded fan on your phone. For the cooling, nothing here substitutes for moving air. They are two separate things, and a recording only covers the sound.
- Can a fan make your throat dry?
- MedlinePlus lists a dry feeling in your throat as a symptom of dry mouth, and breathing through your mouth among its causes, next to some medicines, diseases and treatments. It doesn't mention fans. If you have dry mouth, MedlinePlus says it's important to find out the cause, which a health care provider or dentist can help with. We cover it further in is sleeping with a fan bad.
- Does the fan sound app work without Wi-Fi?
- Yes. The five fan sounds are stored in the app, so playback doesn't need a connection.
- Will the sound stop by itself?
- Yes, if you start the sleep timer. Presets are 15m, 30m, 1h and 2h, and the volume fades out over 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 5 minutes before it stops.
