Birthday reminders not working on iPhone
Updated
If birthday reminders aren't working on your iPhone, first check the alert schedule in the app where you saved the birthday, then check its iOS notification permission. For birthdays from Contacts, review Calendar's Default Alert Times → Birthdays; for Birthday Countdown, check the person's saved reminder. Next, review Focus and Scheduled Summary, which can affect delivery, as explained in Apple's notification settings guide.
1. Check where you saved the birthday
Start with one missed birthday and identify where its date lives. That determines which settings to check.
| Where you saved it | Where to check the alert |
|---|---|
| A contact's birthday field | Calendar's default birthday alert settings |
| A calendar event you created | The event's own Alert setting |
| Birthday Countdown | The reminder saved for that birthday |
The Calendar controls are documented in Apple's Calendar settings guide and event editing guide.
Birthday Countdown keeps its own list and doesn't import birthdays from Contacts or the iPhone calendar. If the person exists only in Contacts, add them to Birthday Countdown before expecting a reminder from it.
2. Check Calendar's birthday alert settings
For birthdays saved in Contacts:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Calendar.
- Tap Default Alert Times.
- Tap Birthdays and choose when you want an alert.
These are the controls in Apple's Calendar settings instructions. Check this even when the birthday already appears in Calendar: seeing a date and configuring an alert are separate checks.
For a birthday you entered as an ordinary calendar event, open Calendar, tap that event, then tap Edit → Alert. Choose when to be reminded and save with the Done button. Apple documents these per-event steps.
If you need help identifying how you originally added the date, see how to add birthdays to iPhone Calendar.
3. If the birthday itself is missing, check the saved date
Open Contacts, select the person and check their birthday. To correct it, tap Edit, update the information and finish with Done, following Apple's contact editing instructions.
Then open Calendar, tap the Calendars button and select Birthdays. Apple's iOS 26 calendar guide identifies this as the calendar that includes birthdays from Contacts.
For a recent iCloud birthday change, open Calendar's Calendars list and swipe down to refresh. Apple says changes to the iCloud Birthdays calendar may take until the next day to appear on iPhone. That delay concerns the updated calendar data; it doesn't establish why an existing alert was missed. See Apple's iCloud syncing guidance.
4. Allow notifications from the right app
Open Settings → Notifications and select Calendar or your birthday reminder app. Turn on Allow Notifications and choose the alert locations you want, such as the Lock Screen, Notification Center or banners.
If you use Scheduled Summary, check the app's delivery setting and choose Immediate Delivery if you want alerts outside the summary. Apple explains both controls in its notification settings guide.
Check the app identified in step 1. For example, enabling Calendar notifications doesn't grant permission to Birthday Countdown.
5. Review the Focus active at the reminder time
Open Settings → Focus, choose the Focus you use around that time, then tap Apps or Choose Apps.
Check which rule is selected:
- With Allow Notifications From, add the app you want to receive alerts from.
- With Silence Notifications From, check whether that app is being silenced and adjust the selection.
Apple's Focus guide documents both modes. Review the relevant Focus rather than changing a different profile: a Work profile and a Sleep profile can have different app selections.
6. Save a reminder in Birthday Countdown
Birthday Countdown supports reminders on the birthday, 1 day, 3 days or 1 week before, or a custom number of days. You can choose the hour; the default is 10:00.
When adding a birthday:
- Open Birthdays and tap + at the top right.
- On New Birthday, enter the required First name and choose the day and month.
- Tap Reminders, then +.
- Choose the reminder's lead time and hour, then tap Save Notification.
- Finish with Save Birthday.
Before expecting an alert, check the date implied by the lead time. For a birthday on June 20, a one-week-before reminder is due June 13. A same-day reminder is due June 20. Write down the expected date and hour so you can compare them with what happens.
The app uses local iPhone notifications, and denying notification permission prevents its reminders. Reminders are included in the tier that's free for up to 5 active birthdays; unlimited birthdays require Premium.
If an alert still doesn't arrive, record the app, expected date and time, permission setting, and Focus active at that time when seeking support. Those details make the problem easier to investigate than “notifications don't work.”
FAQ
- Why am I not getting birthday notifications on my iPhone?
- Check the alert schedule in the app holding the birthday, then check that iOS allows that app's notifications. For birthdays from Contacts, review Calendar's Default Alert Times for Birthdays. Focus and Scheduled Summary can also affect notification delivery.
- Why is a birthday showing in Calendar but no notification appears?
- A visible birthday doesn't confirm that an alert is configured. Check Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Alert Times > Birthdays, then review Calendar's notification permission and the Focus you use around the alert time.
- Where do I turn on birthday alerts on iPhone?
- For Calendar birthdays, go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Alert Times > Birthdays and choose an alert option. For Birthday Countdown, reminders are configured per birthday inside the app, and iOS notification permission must also be enabled.
- Why hasn't an edited iCloud birthday appeared in Calendar yet?
- Apple says the iCloud Birthdays calendar updates daily on iPhone, so a birthday change may not appear until the next day. You can refresh Calendar by opening its Calendars list and swiping down.
- Do I need Premium for Birthday Countdown reminders?
- Birthday Countdown includes reminders in its tier that's free for up to 5 active birthdays. Unlimited birthdays require Premium. Denying iPhone notification permission prevents reminders regardless of the plan.
