Which counter app fits what you need to count?
Updated
A counter app lets you keep a tally by tapping instead of remembering the total. For simple counting, look for clear add and subtract buttons and separate named counters; if you need a spreadsheet, a custom counting step or an Apple Watch screen, check for those features before installing.
Choose by the job, not the name
Several unrelated apps use names such as Counter or Tally Counter. They can look similar in search results while offering different ways to count and save your work.
Start with what happens after the counting session. A number you will read and write down yourself needs less setup than a stock count you must send to a spreadsheet. A visitor tally at one door is different from a shared total maintained by staff at several entrances.
| What you need | Feature to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reps, laps or one visitor tally | Large + button and a way to correct a tap | You can count one event at a time and undo a mistake |
| Several exercises, shelves or sessions | Separate counters with names | Each total stays attached to the thing you counted |
| Counting packs or batches | Custom step size | One tap can represent a chosen number of items |
| A record you can send to someone | Export, including the format | A total on the screen is not the same as a downloadable file |
| Counting without holding your phone | Watch app or interactive widget | You need a counting control on the device you will actually use |
| Multiple people contributing to one total | Shared counters or synchronization | Independent counts on different phones do not combine themselves |
You may only need the first two rows. If so, a manual app with named counters can do the job without adding goals, reminders or a shared workspace.
Three iPhone options with different features
This is a feature comparison, not a speed test or a ranking based on user ratings. The other apps' details come from their linked App Store descriptions, checked on October 14, 2026. Features and paid plans can change.
| App | Features relevant to choosing | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Tally Counter, from Endurance Apptitude | Unlimited named counters and +1/−1 counting are free; Premium adds Insights | No CSV export, custom step, widgets, Watch app or device sync |
| Counter Tally Count, from Tevfik Yucek | Its listing includes configurable steps, CSV export, counter locking and widgets | The listing says Free with in-app purchases; verify the paid access for the features you need |
| Tally Counter: Tap & Track, from Fosh Labs OU | Its listing includes gesture counting, Home Screen widgets and an Apple Watch app | Widgets and Apple Watch are listed as Premium; check its purchase terms and counter limits |
If export is essential, our app will not meet that requirement. If you just want several named numbers on your iPhone, counting in our app is free and does not require an account.
For a single tally you want to start in the browser, use the online click counter. That web tool also has step sizes of 1, 5 and 10; the iPhone app always adds or subtracts one per tap.
Try one realistic session
Before putting an app into regular use, run through the same actions you will need on the day:
- Name a counter after a real task, such as "Shelf A" or "Morning laps".
- Add a few items and correct one extra tap.
- Create a second counter and check that its total is separate.
- Leave the counting screen and return to it.
- Find the reset control and check what it clears.
- If you need export or another device, try that part too before collecting a long session's worth of data.
This reveals whether the workflow fits you. A clear screen can still be the wrong choice when the one feature you need at the end is missing.
Set up Tally Counter on your iPhone
Open the Counters list and tap Create Counter when the list is empty, or New Counter to add another. Enter a name and tap Create. Open the counter, use + for each item, and use − to correct an extra tap; subtraction is disabled at zero.
Repeat for each separate tally. Inside a counter, Edit opens Edit Counter so you can rename it. Reset asks "Reset this counter to 0?" before clearing the number.
Named counters and counting are free. Premium Insights adds total actions, daily average, peak hour, an hourly activity chart and recent activity. These are activity statistics, so do not assume they replace the current count on the counting screen.
For examples of organizing several tallies, see using multiple counters. For counting arrivals at an event, see the attendance clicker guide.
