Tasbeeh counter app: what to look for on iPhone
Updated
A tasbeeh counter has three jobs: keep a separate number for each practice, let you feel each tap without looking, and stay out of the way. Tally Counter does those three on iPhone, with named counters, haptic feedback on every tap and no ads. It's a general counter, so there are no preset prayers or mantras: you name each counter yourself.
What to look for in a tasbeeh counter app
Whichever app you pick, these six checks tell you if it fits how you count.
| What to check | Why it matters for dhikr or japa | Tally Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Separate counters | Morning and evening practice, or different phrases, shouldn't share one number | Yes, named, no limit |
| Feeling the tap | You can keep your eyes closed or on something else | Haptic feedback, which you can switch off |
| Fixing a mistap | A stray tap shouldn't force a restart | − removes one, never below zero |
| Ads | Ads interrupt the practice | None |
| Free tier | You should know the cost before you start | Counting is free with unlimited counters |
| Preset texts and targets | Some people want them, some don't | Not included: no preset texts, goals or reminders |
Check the last row against what you want. If you need a built-in list of phrases or a target that stops the count, Tally Counter isn't the right fit. If you want a plain counter you name yourself, it is.
How to count dhikr, zikr or naam jap with Tally Counter
These are the steps in the app, in order.
- Open the Counters list. On the first launch, tap Create Counter. After that, tap New Counter at the bottom.
- In the New Counter sheet, type a name in the field (the placeholder reads "e.g. Push-ups") and tap Create. Use whatever name tells you which practice it is, such as "Morning dhikr" or "Naam jap".
- Open the counter and tap the large + button once for each recitation. The number is shown in a flip-style display, and a Today badge shows your net change today (adds minus subtracts).
- If you tap too many times, press −. It removes one and stops at zero.
- To start the count again, press the reset button (the circular arrow). The app asks "Reset this counter to 0?" before it clears anything.
To rename a counter, open it and tap Edit. To delete one, swipe it in the Counters list.
One counter per practice
Counting several practices with one number means resetting back and forth, and losing your place. Tally Counter has no limit on counters, so you can keep one for each phrase or each time of day (more on keeping several counters). Because each has a name, the list shows you which is which before you open it.
Haptic taps
Each + and − gives a tap you can feel, and reset gives its own. That lets you count without checking the screen after every press. If you prefer silence in your hand, tap the gear on the Counters list, open Settings and switch off Haptic feedback under Counting.
Ads and cost
There are no ads in Tally Counter, and counting is free with unlimited named counters. Premium is a separate purchase for the Insights views and the activity log, so you don't need it to count.
What it doesn't do
So you can decide before installing: there's no iCloud sync or account, so counts stay on your iPhone. You can't export your data. There are no widgets, no Apple Watch app, and no Android or web version. The app doesn't count for you, either: it doesn't use sensors, the camera or the microphone.
FAQ
- How do I use a tasbeeh counter?
- Open the counter for your practice and tap + once for each recitation. If you tap by mistake, − takes one off, and it never goes below zero. In Tally Counter, each practice can have its own named counter.
- Is there a zikr counter app with no ads?
- Tally Counter has no ads. Counting is free with unlimited named counters. Premium only adds Insights: total actions, daily average, peak hour, an hourly chart and a recent activity log.
- Is there a counter app for naam jap?
- Tally Counter works for naam jap, japa or any other practice you count by tapping. Create a counter, name it, and tap + for each repetition. It has no preset prayers or mantras, so you type your own name for each counter.
- Can a digital tasbeeh counter keep my place?
- In Tally Counter, counts are saved on your iPhone, so each counter keeps its number until you reset it. Reset asks you to confirm first.
- Does Tally Counter have a target or an automatic count?
- No. There are no goals or reminders, and the app doesn't count for you. It doesn't use the microphone or camera, so every count is a tap.
