Counter app with multiple counters
Updated
To count several things at once, give each one its own named counter instead of reusing a single number. In Tally Counter you can create as many counters as you want, free, and the Counters list shows every name next to its current total.
Why one counter per thing works
With one counter per thing, each total stays separate and you can add to any of them without touching the others.
Good things to give their own counter:
- Reps for each exercise
- Laps in the pool or on the track
- Visitors through a door or to a booth
- Pages read, rows knitted or items on a shelf
For the knitting case there's a separate guide on counting rows.
How to set up several counters in the app
- Open the app. On the first launch the list is empty and shows a Create Counter button. Once you have at least one counter, the button at the bottom reads New Counter.
- Type a name in the field under Name. The placeholder reads "e.g. Push-ups".
- Tap Create. The new counter is added at the bottom of the list.
- Repeat for each thing you want to count.
- Tap a counter in the list to open it. Use the large + button to add one and − to subtract one. The − button is disabled at zero, so the count never goes negative.
The list keeps working as a dashboard. Each row shows the counter's name, how long ago it was updated, and its current total, so you can check every count without opening them.
How to name and organize counters without folders
The app doesn't have folders or groups. It has one list, in the order you created the counters, so the name does the organizing. Some patterns that work with that:
| Pattern | Example names | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Thing first, detail after | "Laps - Mon", "Laps - Wed" | You count the same thing on different days and want them next to each other |
| Person or place | "Door A", "Door B" | You're counting visitors at more than one spot |
| Exercise names | "Push-ups", "Squats", "Pull-ups" | A workout with several movements |
| Session label | "Inventory - shelf 3" | One-off counts you'll delete afterwards |
Short names read better in the list, since each row shows the name on one line.
Because new counters go to the bottom, create the ones you use most often first. Delete the ones you're done with so the list stays short.
Rename or delete a counter
To rename, open the counter and tap Edit. The Edit Counter sheet has a name field; change it and tap Save. Save stays disabled while the name is empty.
To delete, swipe the counter in the Counters list. Deleting removes the counter and its count, so note the number first if you need it.
Using several counters in one session
If you're counting two things in the same moment, like laps and then reps after each lap, open one counter at a time. Tap back to the Counters list, open the next one and keep going. Each counter remembers its own total between visits, and the data stays on your iPhone.
The Today badge inside a counter shows that counter's net change today: each + tap adds one and each − tap subtracts one, so it can go below zero. Haptic feedback on each tap can be turned off from the gear icon at the top right of the Counters list, using the Haptic feedback switch in Settings.
Resetting asks first ("Reset this counter to 0?"), so you can't wipe a total with a stray tap.
What it doesn't do
Every counter goes up and down by one. There's no custom step, no goal and no reminder, and the app doesn't count for you: you tap each time. Data isn't synced across devices, and there are no folders. If you need any of those, this app isn't the match.
Counting is free with unlimited counters. Premium adds Insights for each counter: total actions, daily average, peak hour, an hourly activity chart and a recent activity log. You can read more about the app on the Tally Counter page, or start with what a tally counter is.
FAQ
- How many counters can I have in the app?
- There's no limit on the number of counters, and creating them is free.
- How do I rename a counter?
- Open the counter, tap Edit, change the name in the Edit Counter sheet and tap Save.
- How do I delete a counter?
- In the Counters list, swipe the counter and delete it.
- Can I group counters into folders?
- No. The app has one flat list, so the name is how you organize. Put the shared word first, like 'Laps - Mon' and 'Laps - Wed', and similar counters sit together.
- Is there a counter app for multiple things at once?
- Yes. [Tally Counter](/tally-counter) keeps each thing in its own named counter, so you can count push-ups, laps and visitors separately and see all the totals in one list.
- Does each counter keep its own total?
- Yes. Each counter has its own number, its own + and − buttons and its own reset.
